Moving On and Looking Forward

I am angry and have had to take this time between the primary until today to have the composure to write down my thoughts without SOUR GRAPES and PUCKERING UP myself. I am not sure who I am angry with, either the PACs or a labor union that endorsed a total failure of a Democratic candidate or the voters for voting like sheep possibly based on the endorsements. I hate insulting our voters that way, though, whereas, I believe the PACs and labor union should have known better and have a responsibility to the constituents in our county to give them an informed endorsement of the best candidates.

I have worked on political campaigns and been a “hard core” Democrat since I was 18 and first voted for Walter Mondale for President to save us from the disaster of Reagan. We all know how that turned out. Maybe I am doomed to work on campaigns that meet with failure. All the candidates I have supported and helped were people I believed in and felt were right for the position they were seeking. In the case of Monroe County Clerk, I found Jenn Marcum to be the best candidate out of all those running on both the Republican and Democratic ticket. She has extensive experience working with elections and directly with Jim Fielder (R), County Clerk. She has extensive knowledge of our election laws and has had a plethora of fiduciary responsibility in agencies through United Way. But, I digress. Her qualifications matter NONE now. She is out of the race and she is no longer a choice that can be made for our county clerk’s office. We now have 2 options. Candi Haley (R) and Linda Robbins (R…oops! I mean D). Basically, we have two republicans running against each other in the general election. One who was a self professed Republican until 2008 and, worse, fired for her inability to perform simple tasks for which she will be in charge of if she is elected. The other candidate is a REAL Republican who has experience with the clerk’s office and has no evidence of being incapable of filling the position she hopes to fill. I observed Candi with the Clerk’s office staff and she is a person who is respected. On election night, I sat in the clerk’s office with Candi and Jenn, watching the results come in and these two women could discuss in detail the clerk’s office needs and duties and it was clear to me that either woman would be an acceptable replacement for the current clerk of the court. As I was there, both women interacted with Jim Fielder and the rest of the volunteers and staff at the clerk’s office who were there working the election. There was great camaraderie between both ladies and the staff and administrators. As the results came in it was clear that Jenn lost, the mood in the office changed dramatically. The sadness and intense emotions were apparent and Jenn kept a smile on her face and said it would be ok. And, it must be.

As a life-long Democrat, I have never voted for a Republican. However, come November 2, 2010, I will make my very first vote for a REAL Republican because if it is between a person who was terminated from the clerk’s office and a Republican that is respected already in the clerk’s office, I think the choice is clear.

It was shortsighted and completely irresponsible for the PACs and a labor union to endorse a candidate for an office from which she was terminated. I also feel it was disingenuous for Linda Robbins to say in a forum, her biggest concern is to make the staff feel safe and secure after a turnover of any kind in leadership. If she were elected, the staff would be EXTREMELY concerned and unhappy as they were affected by her incompetence and are still having to deal with the improperly filed cases and other job duties done poorly by Linda Robbins. It is sad and pathetic that the PACs in this town didn’t ask their candidate to step down. If I were a part of Linda Robbin’s committee, I would have told her it was best for the Democratic Party to STEP DOWN and allow a better candidate, capable of winning and improving the clerk’s office to run and win. If Linda Robbins wins, that office will be turned upside down, merely a result of the fact that she will be supervising those that she was rude to, created more work for and showed a lack of leadership to as a staff person. Imagine the judges and court administrators having to deal with her, not to mention human resources staff. I can’t imagine what precipitated this choice by the DFMC, DWC, and UAW. It’s a travesty and as a Democrat and having lived in Indiana for just 4 yrs this July, I am blown away at the lack of leadership and professionalism in the Democratic Party here. On a scale from one to five, I would give this county’s Democratic Party a 0. As much as I disrespect the PACs in this town, I will work feverishly to ensure we hold our Democratic seats in Congress and the Senate in DC and build a stronger Democratic leadership in Indiana. We have a lot of work to do and I won’t allow the unprofessionalism and rudeness deter me from my duty to my Party and what I believe is right. As for the County Clerk’s race, however, I will NOT vote Democrat. So, the “old shoe” that Linda Robbins talks about is going to be kept around for 40 years if I have anything to say about it. It’s the one time in my life I will work for a Republican. I can’t back an incompetent and disingenuous candidate for a position at the local level. It’s not worth it. It doesn’t matter. What’s another 4 years out of 40 anyway for the position of Clerk of Courts? Life will at least go on and things won’t be turned upside down by incompetence and a lack of leadership. I can’t say that enough. Regardless of Linda Robbins’ experience and education, her experience in the Clerk’s office should have been a wakeup call for voters, unions and PAC groups.

  1. Wow...I really feel bad for you and Jenn! I know you worked really hard for a very different result. I'm very sorry.

There are two ways to look at your vote for clerk, though: (1) Not vote for clerk at all; thus, you're voting neither for the unqualified Dem nor the Republican; or (2) vote for the Republican. I use the first choice to keep my 'never voted for a Republican' record squeaky clean. :)

  2. I think you have a point there, Dina. I would love to keep my voting record squeaky clean. I have been such a good party supporter my entire adult life. I think I prefer the 1st choice, but worry that Linda can hoodwink her way into that office which is scary for me to think of for our court system. sigh. It's a sad situation.

    1. Theresa, I do not know if this is even active anymore, since it is dated 2010. Anyhow, off-topic, I am curious if you ever worked on the Quantico Marine base?

  3. You've plenty of time to see how the average voter is thinking. My experience has been the person I didn't want to win lost BIG time. :)

  4. Oops, I commented on the wrong post, here it is in the right place.
Do you really want republicans in charge of buying voting machines and voting? Would it not be better to support Linda and for Jenn to work in the office to add to her experience so she can run again?
So come on, please do not become a teabagger. Do not support a republican. Don't let the likes of bud bernnitt and scott tibbs control our voting machines. Even if you do not vote for Linda, please don't help the other team!

  5. I would prefer a COMPETENT person who will work well with others and I don't see any reason why Candi would be any worse at buying voting machines and being in control of voting than a person who will turn the office upside down with her presence and has proven with her errors in her own campaign that she has little knowledge of election law to boot. Her mere presence in that office will be disruptive and ridiculous. It's a joke that she is even allowed on the ballot. I WILL help Candi if I see that Linda is building support based on lies and disingenuous means. She has no business running for an office that she has disrupted as simple staff person.

I am not a teabagger, btw, and you have no business suggesting such a thing. I am a true Democrat, more so than Linda Robbins. I WILL support the BEST person for the job and I trust Candi more than I do Linda. But, I think at this point I need to let the voters make the best choice. I just find it pathetic and truly STUPID for the local PACs and a labor union to back such a poor candidate that will probably put Candi in office anyway.

And I find your assumption that Jenn would be offered a position by Linda way out there. Also to assume Jenn would work FOR or WITH someone the likes of Linda is a stretch.

I will NOT vote for Linda just because she is a NEW Democrat. She is for all intents and purposes a Republican except for the last Presidential election. So, your logic is warped and, as far as I can tell, rather naive.

  6. Dear Theresa,
After reading your blog post I felt compelled to comment.
Like you, I have never voted for a Republican and before I would ever do that I would opt to not vote at all.
This is your call, but to me, it would be a matter of conscience.
One only has to look at the environmental disaster that has exploded onto the scene in the Gulf of Mexico on Earthday.
This was caused by Republicans and their failure to installing safety valves to prevent the resulting blowout that occurred at that deep water oil well.
They have showed comtemp for our environment and can only point at one another to try to deflect blame from themselves instead of standing up and accepting responsibility for their actions.
I have to admit that I do not know the people you are speaking about in your blog, but I know this, Voting for a Republican is not an option for me because it supports a party that has done this to us.
Iwould feel like voting for a Republican would be the same as voting for the Gulf of Mexico environmental oil disaster but that’s just me.
With all due respect, thank you for sharing your views.

  7. Theresa, I just visited your blog for the first time and enjoyed reading your post although I can feel your irritation here and it is completely understandable and an ongoing situation. I speak about this on my blog as well in a recent post, "What divides our Nation?"

I think the fact is though that you are involved and you do your part, you let your voice be heard, you get others involved and where it goes from there is in so many ways out of your hands. The idea is to get people out to vote. Not just to vote though but to vote as well as understand what they are voting for and who they are voting for.

I will bookmark your blog to come back and please remember me when you update your blog, maybe DM me on Twitter. Thanks:)

  8. Wonderful and EVERYONE in Indiana should read your post!! I disagree with @SupermanHotMale for blaming the Oil Spill on Republicans...enough on the blame and find solutions!! It has a lot to do with the EPA making Oil Companies drill that far in the first place not Republicans! Amazing Post :)

  9. I enjoyed reading your Blog Post Theresa (albeit the fact that I am commenting many months later and after the fact). Likewise, I very much appreciated Tracy Solomon's comments as well.

I feel compelled to say something given 'fanderson's' comments above about not blaming the Republicans for the Oil Spill. In my view the Republicans are very much to blame for aiding and abetting the oil spill in the Gulf. It is the institutional stooges that were complicit as a result of many years of Republican policies of looking the other way. The EPA management was rife with managers at the top that were hand picked by Republicans. To suggest that we should look the other way and not blame the Republicans for some of the Oil Spill in the Gulf is ludicrous and akin to sticking one's head in the sand.

Though I very much like moving forward and learning from one's mistakes, to dismiss blame is to ignore the cause, and in this respect I submit that 'fanderson's' argument is very, very misguided.

Thanks for taking the time to write such an excellent commentary Theresa. It is obvious that you care a great deal and that you've put your heart and soul in to the 2010 election for the Democrats; now and in the past. I am sure you did what was best under the circumstances.

With warmest regards from Nanaimo, BC, Canada,

    Hans Lussenburg
